“정원은 2000년부터 계속해서 작업해왔다. 정원의 소재는 대부분 소쇄원과 여행으로부터 얻었다. 2000년경 정원을 작업할 당시 개인적으로 가장 민감하게 바라본 논의는 인공생명과 인공지능에 대한 것들이었다. 기계가 인간 혹은 자연을 모사해 자연의 일부와 같은 형태를 갖췄을 때 기계를 자연의 일부로 인정할 수 있는지에 대한 궁금증이 이 작업의 시작점이었다.” – 인터뷰 내용 중

A Garden Since the time when the humans started to imitate the nature, the nature and the machine civilization became inseparable in their progress. If the man-made machines work in the boundaries of the nature, should we accept the machines as a part of the nature? As the magic and the machines that are wrapped with wind-up springs wounded the human nature in the past, the machines in the present are recognized as a part of the human civilization and shows continuity between itself and the humans. Even though, the human evolution was and still is relied upon the development of tools and machines, the humans still deny the continuity between machines and themselves. ‘A Garden’ is a man-made replica of the Natural Environments. Through this, the nature and the human creations are placed in the same environment, and by observing these two, the humans find the continuity between the nature and their own creations. NATURALISTIC(sub title) The humans created the machines by imitating the nature, however the machines that cannot revolve back to nature cannot stay in the boundaries.

Garden 2002 was made in Software Graphics Engine based on Visual C++.

인간이 자연을 모방하기 시작했을 때 자연은 기계문명과 공진(共進)하게 되었다. 인간이 만든 기계가 자연의 범주 안에서 움직이고 있다면 인간은 기계를 하나의 자연물로 인정해야 하는가? 과거 마술과 태엽으로 쌓여진 기계가 인간의 정체성에 상처를 입혔던 것처럼 현대의 기계는 문명의 한 부분으로 인식되면서 인간과 연속적인 관계임을 보여준다. 그러나 인간의 진화가 도구와 기계의 발견과 발전에 의지했음에도 인간은 기계와의 연속성을 부정한다. 정(亭)은 인간의 인공적인 자연환경을 모사(模寫)한 작업들이다. 이로 인해 자연과 그들의 피조물들이 같은 환경에 놓이게 되고, 그것을 관망함으로써 인간은 서로간의 연속성을 찾는다.
