미상의사유 (Contemplation of the Unknown)

“미상의 사유”는 사유하는 기계에 대한 작품입니다. 과거 2015-2016년에 제작한 “해체된 사유와 나열된 언어(The Listed words and fragmented meanings)”의 후속작이라고 생각해도 좋습니다. “해체된 사유와 나열된 언어”는 과학 철학자와 공학 저술가의 책 9권을 학습시킨 LSTM를 통해 기계가 사유할 수 있는지 보여주는 작품이었습니다. 물론 오류와 실패를 어느정도 가정해두었고, 기계가 결국은 그저 단어의 나열이나 인간의 사유를 보여주는 문장을 제대로 복제하지 못하고 해체된 문장만을 보여주었다는 결론의 작품이기도 했습니다.
2025년은 그 작품을 제작한지 10년이 되는 해입니다. LLM모델의 발전으로 이제 기계는 스스로 사유할 수 있거나, 최소한 인간의 사유를 흉내 낼 수 있을 거라 믿고 있습니다. 작품을 통해 저는 인간이 사유하는 기계와 어떻게 공존할 수 있을지 제대로 질문하고 싶습니다.
“Contemplation of the Unknown” is a work about a machine that thinks. It can be regarded as a follow-up to my 2015–2016 project “The Listed Words and Fragmented Meanings.”
That earlier work attempted to show whether a machine could think, using an LSTM model trained on nine books written by science philosophers and engineering theorists. Naturally, errors and failures were anticipated, and the machine ultimately failed to replicate human thought or generate coherent sentences. Instead, it produced disassembled fragments of language—demonstrating its limits.
It has now been 10 years since that earlier work. With the advancement of LLMs, I now believe machines may be capable of thought—or at least of convincingly imitating human thinking. Through this new project, I want to raise meaningful questions about how we humans might coexist with thinking machines.
