Parallel & Symmetric Dialogue, 2021
Parallel & Symmetric Dialogue stems from the question of whether conversations that are absolutely parallel and equal are possible within the complex relationships we generate. The work is composed of two speakers and two rhombus-shaped LED objects, each measuring 1.6 m in width and length. These objects might appear to be facing each other diagonally, but they are slightly out of symmetry, and the LED lights on both sides project geometric shapes in random places at fixed intervals. As the LED device on each side lights up regularly, the lights appear to be engaging in a dialogue. The dialogue is symmetric and regular in the beginning, but then it gradually becomes unstable and unpredictable. Its speed also accelerates. When the dialogue reaches its apex, the object releases images and noises that are disintegrated to the point of incomprehensibility. Repeating the process of disappearance and creation, the rapid exchange of light offers stability for a brief moment, but then leaves only tension, discomfort, and anxiety. Parallel & Symmetric Dialogue is composed of a sequence of four videos, which are generated by a computer in real time. An algorithm controls all videos, and their components are generated at random. Therefore, a newly created video cannot be identical to the same sequence of videos produced previously; similarly, the dialogue between the two objects is analogous, never identical. The four sequences are guided by a set playback time, but they do not play for the exact same duration. Instead, following a loosely set playback time, the four sequences total approximately five minutes. The arrangement of images, the criteria of durational time, and the software algorithm that make up Parallel & Symmetric Dialogue imply the impossibility of a fully controlled dialogue, or a conversation that is purely equal.
평등한, 대칭적 대화, 2021
<평등한, 대칭적 대화>는 우리가 형성하고 있는 수많은 관계 속에서 과연 완전하게 평등한 대화가 가능한가 라는 의문에서 시작한 작업이다. 작품은 마름모로 제작된 가로 1.6미터, 세로 1.6미터의 LED 오브제 2개와 스피커 등으로 구성되어 있다. 서로를 마주보게 설치된 오브제는 얼핏 대칭으로 보이지만 미묘하게 어긋나 있고, 양쪽의 LED 장치는 규칙적인 간격을 두고 마주보는 화면의 영상에 기초해 도형들을 주고 받는다. 규칙적으로 시차를 두고 빛나는 양쪽의 장치는 마치 빛을 이용해 대화를 시도하는 듯 보인다. 대화는 대칭적이고 규칙적으로 시작해서 불완전하고 불규칙하게 변모하며, 시간이 흐름에 따라 대화의 속도도 점차 빨라진다. 대화가 정점에 이르렀을 때 오브제는 읽을 수 없을 정도로 분해된 이미지들과 노이즈를 토해낸다. 사라지고 생성되기를 반복하며 빠르게 교환되는 빛의 움직임은 잠시 간의 안정 이후 긴장감과 불편함 그리고 불안으로 변모한다.
<평등한, 대칭적 대화>는 총 4개의 영상 시퀀스로 이루어져 있으며, 영상은 컴퓨터를 통해 실시간으로 생성된다. 모든 영상은 알고리즘에 의해 제어되며 마주보는 영상에 영향을 받아 유사하지만 무작위적인 형태로 생성된다. 새롭게 생성되는 영상은 이전에 생성된 동일 시퀀스와 완전하게 일치할 수는 없으며, 마주보는 두 오브제 사이의 대화 역시 유사할 뿐 전혀 일치하지 않는다. 4개의 시퀀스는 재생 시간에 관한 지침을 가지고 있지만 완벽하게 같은 재생 시간을 지키는 것은 아니며, 도합 5분가량이라는 느슨한 러닝타임 기준이 있을 뿐이다. <평등한, 대칭적 대화>를 이루는 영상의 배치와 시간의 기준 그리고 소프트웨어 알고리즘은 완전하게 통제되는 대화나 순수하게 평등한 대화는 불가능할 수밖에 없다는 암시를 드러낸다.
