Facing Anonymous Series
The “Facing Anonymous” series is a latent space video of the result of transfer learning of Spoqa Sans based on the StyleGAN2 Birds dataset. StyleGAN2, one of the GANs algorithms of artificial intelligence, is a machine learning algorithm that learns and references multiple sheets of human faces, specific objects, or landscapes to generate new images that are similar to existing image sources. “Facing Anonymous” is the result of transfer learning by re-learning typefaces, which are completely different data-set, based on a model that has learned high-resolution images of birds. As a result of transfer learning, there are almost no traces of the physical shape of the existing birds, but the matière is maintained to a certain extent, and the shape of the typeface changes into a state that can be felt vaguely. This variation of transfer learning produces unfamiliar and creative results, but it also works as a fairly representative tool that highlights the incompleteness of artificial intelligence.

“Facing Anonymous”는 StyleGAN2 Face HQ 데이터셋을 기반으로 Garamond Bold를 전이학습한 결과의 잠재 공간 영상이다. 인공지능의 GANs 알고리즘 중 하나인 StyleGAN은 사람의 얼굴이나 특정할 수 있는 물체들, 혹은 풍경 따위를 여러 장 학습하고 참조해 기존의 이미지와 유사성이 있지만 새로운 이미지를 창작해내는 머신러닝 알고리즘이다. “Facing Anonymous”는 사람의 고해상도 얼굴을 학습한 모델을 이용해 전혀 다른 이미지인 서체들을 재학습시킨 전이학습 결과물이다. 전이학습의 결과물은 사람 얼굴의 흔적을 거의 찾아볼 수 없으며 동시에 서체의 형상도 그저 어렴풋이 느낄 수 있는 상태로 변주하는데, 이런 전이학습의 변주는 독특하고 창의적인 결과물을 가져오기도 하지만 인공지능이 지닌 불완전성을 가속하는 꽤나 정교한 필터로 작용하기도 한다.
